The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is called the original Paulaner. The double bottom fermented beer combines the finest hops and dark barley malt.
The Paulaner monks served Salvator of Lent as a meal replacement. The most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who took over the Paulaner brewery in 1773. His original recipe is still not changed. To protect the original, in 1896 Paulaner had the trade mark “Salvator” registered with the Patent Office.

Brilliant. Heavy stuff. Kind of reminiscent of a wee heavy, but less sweet. A lagery crispness, somehow. Malty nose, low hop aroma and bitterness. Dark amber.
Charlie –
love my German bock beers and this one is up there with the best, excellent strong dark rich and malty. i will defiantly getting more on my next order
duncan scott –
Dark malty beer, strong flavour and strong taste if you like a robust taste def recommend this beer and keeps an excellent head
Pukka P –
Powerful but very drinkable. Makes me think of a thick slice of fresh malty bread with apricot jam. Doesn’t hold a head but you can’t have everything I suppose.
Catriona MacKechnie –
A dark, sweet, malty beer with a subtle hop profile (notes of caramel). Quite heavy though so one or two would be plenty.
Gavin H –
An excellent beer. Good initial head but not lingering. Deceptively strong, a slight hoppiness and a lingering malty aftertaste. Like an old English premium ale.
Paul C –
First time for this Doppelbock.
Dark and malty but,for me, lacking the depth of flavour of other doppelbock like Klosters Scheyern or Ayinger Celebrator.
An enjoyable drink nevertheless.
Kristin –
Lovely complex malty flavour, very drinkable
Alan Muhammed –
This is a delicious Starkbier, dark, malty, strong & heavy – you don’t notice the strength and it fills you up. I discovered it in Munich and I’m so pleased we can get it here.
James Murray –
A great big dark menacing dopplebock. Rich and strong on the nose , huge hit of alcohol from the first sip/ 7.9% so pretty boozy . Worth treating this one with respect, deliciously strong and heavy.
Kul –
A wonderful dark colour, fantastic nose and a great body. One I would have again, just make sure you respect how you drink it.
Richard Martin –
You really get the depth of taste and strength. Really satisfying colour, head and aroma. By no means a session beer due to being so heavy, but everything you would hope for from a dopplebock.
John Sanders –
This beer pours a dark, copper colour with a rich, tan head that lingers, leaving generous lacing as you make your way down this masterpiece. The smell is sweet and malty – almost like freshly-baked fruit cake. The taste follows the nose, but the hops gradually come to the fore, leaving a clean, quite dry finish, much like the way I leave my glass after drinking this wonderful beer. A world-class beverage.
Colin A –
Nice and malty. Can feel the alcohol but not too overpowering. A sipper not a gulper.
Alastair Paterson –
Amber/copper colour. Nice and spicy on the tongue.
WJ –
I’m not sure if this is the original doppelbock or not but it’s top of the class, smooth and sweet with a creamy head. Goes down much easier than the ABV suggests. I only bought one…..bad move!
Kris –
A fine doppelbock – a lot of depth and needs to be taken slow
Matthew –
A good beer from a top brewer – very flavoursome – in my top 10 German beers
Michael Moore –
Rich, dark, strong and full flavoured. A beer to treat with respect, not just because of the abv. Sip and enjoy!
Steve Bruce –
Not for me, not bad but just not what I hoped for, its just lacking in body I think. Taste was alright but seemed overly sweet and lacking any depth of flavour. Not very hoppy, certainly not malty, not bready …. whatever that means…. a very average beer.
Luke Manley –
Great beer. Would buy again.
Xavier Crepin –
Honest malty beer, easy to drink
Jamie K –
Great beer that I keep coming back to during the winter months. Full bodied, nice to sit back and relax with
MM –
It’s quite high in alcohol, but easy to drink. Relatively sweet, slightly hoppy, it has a deep flavour that doesn’t get too complex or over the top so it can be casually enjoyed. It’s my favourite and first choice to sip on any day.
Paul Harris –
Excellent beer. You really can’t go wrong with a Paulaner. Good taste of malts and good smooth mouthfeel
Edward Youngs –
An excellent Dopplebock beer, very much ‘on par’ with it’s Belgian counterparts!!
