Mexico

You might think that tequila is Mexico’s national drink, but don’t be fooled—beer is big business. It’s been around for centuries and the popularity of the stuff is only ever on the rise, and with more independent breweries being established on a regular basis it’s high time you got in on the Mexican beer bandwagon.

The history of Mexican beer
Mexican beer has been around for centuries, with the style we know and love today being introduced at around the time of the Spanish Conquest. Unfortunately production was limited during colonial times thanks to the restrictions and tax implications imposed, but after the Mexican War of Independence the industry was able to develop to its full potential.

And it developed quickly. By 1918 there were some 36 breweries in the country, and although many of these have now been consolidated into two major corporations that control 90% of the market there’s still plenty of varieties of Mexican beer to enjoy. Beer is a major export too with 150 countries enjoying the best that Mexico has to offer, and whilst Corona and Sol will arguably be the most well-known Mexican beers in the international arena they’re certainly not the only options.

Styles and drinking habits
Lager is perhaps the most prevailing style of Mexican beer, with the first one being created in 1869, and since then it’s gone from strength to strength with pilsner being seen in every bar and pub across the country. But, there are alternatives with the likes of dark beers and Vienna-style beers being found on a small scale, and the rise of microbreweries means there’s now more choice than ever before. As for the wedge of lime often seen in Mexican beers? Well, the practice is actually rarely seen in Mexico itself, but lime juice is a common addition. Beer on tap never caught on and nor did light beer, with bottled beer being the preferred choice for Mexican drinkers.

Feel like a taste of Mexico? Then you’re in the right place. Our extensive range of Mexican beers covers everything you could need to experience the best that the country has to offer, so make sure to indulge in a crisp, cool Mexican beer and you can’t go wrong. Lime wedge optional.&edsp;
