From beer to castle… it’s a long way! Endeavouring to comply with ever more stringent requirements, the master brewer carried out numerous tests before he produced a creamy dark beer.
The fruit of his labours goes under the name of Kasteelbier. It combines the unparalleled quality of the past and a resolutely modern taste. Kasteelbier is a brown craft beer mild and tasty, full bodied and creamy. It has a shelf life of several years.

Kasteel Donker pours a dark brown with a hint of redness, so that in the right light (a pub – remember those?) it appears almost maroon in colour. The head is frothy, almost beige, but rather short-lived with little lacing. The odour is lovely – dark fruits, plums, raisins, and of course the ubiquitous ‘bready’ smell so typical of top-notch Belgian quadrupels. Although intensely sweet, the ‘alcohol burn’ counterbalances the sugar nicely and other flavours pour through – coffee, chocolate, spiced fruit cake and a maltiness at the end that tickles the roof of the mouth. A world class beer.
