Located in Freising, Germany, is a brewery called Weihenstephaner. If you haven’t heard of the brewery, where have you been, this is the oldest brewery in the world. Founded in 1040, Weihenstephaner has stood the test of time and this is down to the heritage of the site on the Wehenstephan hill and to the beers that they produce.
The Hefe Dunkel Weiss is a well-balanced beer that pours a golden yellow in colour. It has an aroma of cloves with flavours of malt, banana, and caramel on the palate. This full bodied, 5.3% wheat beer pairs excellently with any Bavarian food, as well as seafood or purely on its own.

I preferred this dunkel hefeweizen to the standard Weihenstephaner hefeweizen. Very mellow, subtle flavours. I could taste cola! It is quite refreshing and it has a nice texture.

A fantastic Dunkelweizen! Any fan of weissbiers should make it a priority to sample this very moreish beer. Great head and best served in a weizen glass but a stange will do just fine, heck any glass will do fine just get his beer!

Excellent Weizen. Not quite as dark as you might expect from a dunkel, but with a sweet aroma and aftertaste. Pours without too much head, and is easy drinking by not being too fizzy.

Another superb example of a very decent German dunkel; the Weihenstephaner range is generally very tasty, and this doesn’t disappoint at all. It pours with a creamy-looking but not overly-thick head indicating less fizz, which is ok. The colour is like a muddy puddle and the initial spicy aroma of clove, banana and caramel is supported by the first taste. As it goes down, one is left with a sweetish yet spicy after taste. A definite recommend here.

A really enjoyable Dunkel Hefeweizen.
It poured with a nice head and a dark, creamy texture.
As it goes down, the sweet spicy aromas of banana and cloves leave a pleasant aftertaste.
Very moreish,one bottle won’t be enough !

More of a golden-chestnut colour than is typical for a Dunkel, but a beer with loads of character. Superb creamy head, strongly sweet fruit flavours and the expected cloudiness is there but not overly so. A very good example, not surprising given the loooooong history of this brewery.

The refreshment of a wheat beer coupled with darker malty caramel with a pleasant sweetness

Beautifly balanced, great spicy aroma, pours a cloudy amber colour. It has a full body, great rounded mouthful, a pleasantly lingering on the tongue.
A wheat beer I would buy again & again!!

Great pour, great head. Good looking caramel coloured dunkelweiss. Plenty of cloves on the nose with a malty Dunkel element.

This is a beautifully crafted dunkel. Full of flavours, super to drink. In my eyes Weihenstephaner can do no wrong. Absolutely superb.

A malty, sweet Dunkel with strong banana notes and a smooth fruity finish. Very more-ish.

I am new to the dunel weiss scene and a fan of both genres but still undecided on the combo – this version was very drinkable however and generally a fan of this brewery’s weisses

Pours a murky brown colour with small off white head, some retention.
Aroma of banana, clove and caramel. Simple but has nice freshness and intensity to it.
Taste has a sweetness with malt, caramel, bread, some chocolate. Fruity middle with banana, clove, some zest notes leading to a decent bitter finish to offset the sweetness.
Light to medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Doesn’t have the nice creaminess you can get from some weissbiers.
Overall a good tasty dunkelweizen

In my opinion Weihenstephaner do not make a bad beer, malty flavours as you would expect from a dunkel nicely balanced with the sweetness from the wheat. Top class.

Top beer – my second favourite dark wheat beer – smooth and fruity

A splendid Dunkel Heffeweisbier. The aroma is of banana and clove with a hint of malt. Sweet banana and spicy cloves on taste with a malty background. A splendid beer.
