High West Double Rye is a creation from David Perkins at High West, who blends a lively 2 year old made from 95% rye and 5% barley malt, and a rich 16 year old, made from 53% rye, 37% corn and 10% barley malt. The sweetness of the 16 year old, which it gets from the caramel and vanilla, balances the bite of the younger rye. It is then bottled at 46% to avoid a chill haze in the bottle and it van be consumed neat or even in cocktails such as the Manhattan and Old Fashioned.
The aroma of the Double Rye is spice, with apple and a hint of mint. What the nose promises, the taste delivers, with a unique botanical flavour producing a whiskey that has all the taste without the alcohol burn to follow. It finishes with a lingering spice, making it a great value whiskey and definitely one you have to try once.
