Think Jamaica and chances are “beer” won’t be the first thing that springs to mind. But, that doesn’t mean you should disregard it—Jamaican beer actually has a loyal following and with exportation being on the rise the rest of the world can experience the best that native Jamaican breweries have to offer.

Beer brewing in Jamaica
A lot of people don’t realise that beer brewing in Jamaica has actually been around for a pretty long time, with Red Stripe perhaps being the longest-surviving and most well-loved brand in the country—first brewed in 1928 as an ale, in 1938 it changed its recipe to become a pale lager and it’s this same style we know and love today. The beer is brewed by Desnoes & Geddes (or D & G) which, incidentally, is responsible for the lion’s share of beer brands on the island, including the recently-developed Dragon Stout.

Red Stripe sponsorship
Red Stripe started to be exported internationally from the 1970s onwards, and it’s had some fantastic sponsorship opportunities over the years too. It’s sponsored Jamaica’s national bobsled team, became the Caribbean regional sponsor for the 2007 Cricket World Cup and even backed the Jamaican Football Federation’s qualifying efforts during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but it isn’t only in the Caribbean where this brand’s sponsorship can be seen.

It’s becoming an increasingly common sight elsewhere, and in fact, it’s starting to become a recognised part of the UK’s music scene. In 2007 it set up a campaign to champion new music by sponsoring events such as The Camden Crawl and The Great Escape, it’s worked closely with new bands and even initiated the Red Stripe Music Awards where winners were able to bill at Blissfields and The Great Escape music festivals.
