Hannen Alt is a German Altbier, originating from the city of Mönchengladbach. Altbier is strongly associated with the Dusseldorf region of Germany, and translates as ‘old beer’. Is altbier an ale or a lager? Altbier bridges the gap between ale and lager, brewed with top-fermenting ale yeast, yet cold conditioned in the style of a lager. What does altbier taste like? Altbier has a rich malty flavour, with nutty characteristics from the addition of dark malts. Generally, altbiers have a high bitterness from the generous dose of hops used in the brewing process.
Hannen Alt is a classic example of a German altbier. Chestnut brown in colour, the dark malts give rise to brown bread aromas. The flavour is nutty with a hint of tangy hop bitterness. Buy Hannen Alt for a highly unusual beer, unlike any ale or lager you might have tried before.

Very dark, yet light, with a toasted palate and a coffee aftertaste Very slightly bitter but not in any way overpowering. Definitely recommended due to it being so different.

I found this more similar to an ale than a lager. The hops give it a bitterness and there are floral notes. I’d say it is quite a unique beer.

Not the best Alt I’ve tasted, a little underpowered but drinkable nonetheless.

Slightly malty, slightly hoppy, some bitter notes of coffee and dark chocolate but no over powering flavour! A smokey after taste. It’s an interesting beer but I’m not crazy about it, absolutely nothing offensive about it.

Nice but quite ordinary, not the best of the altbiers I’ve ordered in this box

This is a proper, old fashioned beer. Dark chestnut colour, good creamy head. Smells of roasted hops and malt and the taste you’d expect, initially a bit “thin” but with a lingering aftertaste. Like the sort of thing you’d drink in a smoky taproom in Rotherham in the 1970s! Excellent.

Great Alt Beer on par with the draught equivalent as sampled many times in the Dusseldorf Old Town itself.

Great dark chestnut colour, with a roasted malty aroma. Hints of dark chocolate bitterness great creamy head.

Pleasant, but tastes like an average British session ale. So not quite what I expected after tasting other altbier. Nice malty caramel flavour with some bitterness

One of if not the nicest Alt I have sampled – would definitely recommend trying it!

I do not know a great deal about alt beers but this tastes very good indeed, the malt flavour is not overpowering and it has a slightly bitter aftertaste.

A subtle balance of hop and malt. Haven’t tried this kind of beer before, but I’ll be investigating further.

Clear chestnut brown with small off-white head. Aroma of brown bread, caramel, malts, hint of sweet light brown sugars. Taste of light roasted malts, brown bread, caramel, brown sugars, nice roast crisp bitterness with hint of grassiness in finish. Good balance to this, tasty, no surprises, but I’m liking the style.

Boyfriend tried this beer for the first time. Out of 6 other Alt beers this was his favourite. Nice smooth taste

I love this stuff. It brings back a lot of memories (those that I can remember anyway) of my time in Moenchengladbach. It has a very nice taste to it and is not too strong. A very fast delivery service also.
