Other Information

Dark beer was the prodominant beer type in the Munich area up until the second world war. The hard water found in the region played a major part in producing this speciality and Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel is a great example of this.

Incredibly dark with a golden brown gleam when held up to the light. The beer has a malty taste, a warm aroma and summons up a coffee taste sensation when going down. Brewed using five types of malt, two of which are torrified dark and only lightly hopped. It is produced using the traditional double fermentation process.

Bottles and labels can and do vary. This means that the images shown on our website may not be the same as current stock items. If the bottle or label is important please check before ordering. Please be aware that even if the label looks different, that product will be the same product if it has the same barcode. Because we work from the barcode, if producers does not make us aware of a label change we often miss updates until we are contacted about it. Apologies in advance for this.

Please note that it isn’t always possible to provide a perfect looking bottle/label as this very much depends on the condition they are received in from our supplier.

We occasionally have items available in the shop that are not available to purchase online, usually because they are too fragile or large to post.

Unfortunately we do not offer gift packaging.

We currently use DHL, but we do also trial other couriers alongside from time to time.

We don’t currently ship outside the UK and Ireland but it may be something we offer in the future.

Unfortunately our carriers do not offer a time specific delivery service. We can send orders to arrive on a specific date but we would remind you that whilst 98% of deliveries arrive within the stated timeframe we cannot 100% guarantee the day. Couriers do often offer delivery windows on the day, with the option to rearrange if necessary.

If you are ordering as a gift we would ask you to take this into account when arranging delivery.

Please note that we are unable to offer weekend deliveries.

Our boxes come in 6s, 12s, and 24s. By no means are you required to order in those quantities, but it is worth bearing in mind when ordering. A full box also helps to reduce the small chance of damage, as empty compartments collapsing can be a cause of this.

Please check the tracking first, as they may provide an explanation but we welcome the opportunity to nip issues in the bud. Either call us on 01553 812000 or email our [email protected] to hear from our customer service team. Check out delivery details for more information.

If you have changed your mind for whatever reason, you can consult our returns information, or get in contact on 01553 812000.

  1. Luis Branco

One of the best Dunkel beers I’ve ever drunk. At 5% ABV , this malty Bavarian is sweet, smooth and light, which means you can easily have more than one without feeling bloated. That’s a beer to have ready in the fridge!

  2. Pete Saunders

Wow! Didn’t think I liked lager, but this is a whole new ball game. Nice clear dark brown colour and good head. Delicious maltiness. Good level of bitterness. Almost smokey aftertaste. Very decent.

  3. Marcus Wellings

Great tasting beer nice and smooth easy to drink malty after taste at 5% you have to be careful how many you drink

  4. Paul C

Very nice and easy to drink Dunkel.Dark brown in colour it is sweet and malty and pours with smooth head.Keeps head on way down.I will put on my Wishlist for reordering.

  5. Kul

Beautiful dark mahogany colour, clear, crisp with a lovely creamy off white foamy head. Malty, has a full body, every mouthful is a joy, leaves a smooth lingering sweet almost English mild type taste. One I would drink again and again!!!

  6. Kristin

Lovely colour, does have that gleam. Pleasant dark malty beer

  7. Kris

Lots of flavour – big on malty deliciousness

  8. Adam Randall

Easy-drinking fairly typical dunkel. Gentle malty sweetness, roasty flavours, smooth dry finish. Pleasant burnt-toffee notes linger.

  9. James Russell

Lovely colour. Nice bitter taste with caramel overtones. A good alternative to Belgian beer if you want something a bit lighter at 5% abv.

  10. Richard Martin

Not the darkest of dunkels when poured, but nice aroma and depth of flavour. Certainly at the lighter end of the dunkel spectrum, making for a less full-on aftertaste and also easier drinking

  11. MARK BAINTON

A warming Dunkel . Smooth to drink lingering coffee notes to finish not over powering at all. Very good

  12. Alan Sinclair

Quite a nice beer but not as good as others like Kostriza Schwarzbeirs.
A bit too sweet for my taste.

  13. Chris H

Good levels of malt and coffee notes from this. A top end Dunkel, a tad lighter than some of it’s peers but that was no bad thing.

  14. Chris Meechan

Ayinger are a fantastic brewery. This is a wonderful dunkel with malty, roasty notes and hints of caramel.

  15. David Hanson

Fine dunkel, quite sweet: caramel/toffee, coffee finish with a hint of spice

  16. Colin A

Nice and malty beer, very very tasty.

  17. Gavin Harrison

If I could only choose one beer to drink for the rest of my life, this would be very close to the top of the list. Dark red-brown colour and a full creamy head. Malty smoky smell which continues to the taste along with bitter dark chocolate. A lingering but not unpleasant aftertaste. At 5%, strong enough to be taken seriously but still (just) sensible enough to make an excellent session beer. Highly recommended.

  18. Steve Baxter

A lovely dark beer, taste of hint of coffee ,smooth, and refreshing beer.malty ,Smokey taste, another classic Oktoberfest beer ,from a class brewery, enjoy

  19. Peter

A very tasty and enjoyable dunkel

  20. Bernard Hawcroft

Smooth and satisfying. Easily the best Dunkel I have tasted apart from the same house’s Celebrator which is in a class of its own. Good price too.

  21. WJ

I’m not surprised this won so many awards, it’s outstanding. There are notes of coffee but it tends more towards a dark chocolate taste in my opinion. Just the right malt with a hint of sweetness.

  22. Conrad

Of all the dark German lagers I have tried, this is by far the best. Lovely deep colour, hint of dark chocolate and coffee and a lingering malty after taste. At 5% ABV, very easy to chug down. Ayinger do make some cracking beers.

  23. FoggyMountainMan

One of Ayinger’s very best, so so drinkable.

  24. Jamie K

Ordered two, wish I’d ordered more. Very good and very drinkable. Ayinger, one of the best for sure
