Jim Beam Rye is aged for four years in charred oak barrels before bottling at 51%, which makes it a spicier taste with a drier finish than other bourbons. This Jim Beam is a favourite of the Whisky Bible Author Jim Murray, who gave the bourbon ‘Best Rye Aged Under 10 Years’ in the 2010 edition of the series.
The spices fill the nostrils immediately, with the nutmeg, cloves and black pepper coming through quickly. The notion that this is stronger than your average is apparent in the aroma and the taste. Caramel and vanilla notes come through before the warmth of the spice lines the throat. Rounded off superbly with the smoothness of cherry and hints of pepper making this is well-balanced rye whisky with exceptional value. To be enjoyed neat, in cocktails or simply on the rocks, this is a simple bourbon done superbly.
