Duvel Brewery

Duvel Brewery

Duvel Moortgat Brewery is a family run brewery that was started in 1871 by Jan-Leonard Moortgat who came from a family of brewers that resided in Steenhuffel near Brussels. The product they are best known for is Duvel beer, a strong golden pale ale that is transported and sold is forty plus countries.

Back in the early 1970s Duvel Moortgat Brewery was struggling financially. To save themselves they started to bottle and ship the Danish beer brand Tuborg. This arrangement ended in the 1980s but it helped Duvel Brewery survive, as well as giving the nice bonus of a huge distribution network that they didn't have before which was perfect for them to sell their own top product Duvel.

Due to the increase in the Duvel brand and business they have been able to invest in other breweries, as well being able to buy them over completely. This includes the Ommegang brewery over in the United States that has allowed them to have a US distribution business to help sales over the pond. They have also been able to take control of the Belgian breweries Brasserie d'Achouffe in 2006 and De Koninck Brewery in 2010 which allowed them to increase their profile of specialty beers. The most recent purchase by the Duvel brewery is the Californian craft brewery Firestone Walker Brewing Company which took place in 2015.
