Other Information

Established in 1758, Samuel Smith is Yorkshire’s oldest brewery. They brew a wide range of high quality beers made solely from authentic, natural ingredients. They still use stone Yorkshire squares to ferment their ales and stouts (with the exception of Sovereign and Extra Stout) as well as the same yeast strain used since the 1800s. Samuel Smiths Nut Brown Ale is brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground). Brewed with the best barley malt, yeast and aromatic hops. Fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create a relatively dry ale with rich nutty colour and palate of beech nuts, almonds and walnuts. Samuel Smiths Nut Brown Ale is relatively dry with a rich amber-brown colour and nutty flavour derived exclusively from small amounts of dark malt.

For some products supply can be inconsistent, whether that is at the brewery itself or how often we or its supplier imports it. For products that are out of stock, you can sign up to be notified of its return on the product page. From there, as soon as we book the stock in we send an email to you.

Bottles and labels can and do vary. This means that the images shown on our website may not be the same as current stock items. If the bottle or label is important please check before ordering. Please be aware that even if the label looks different, that product will be the same product if it has the same barcode. Because we work from the barcode, if producers does not make us aware of a label change we often miss updates until we are contacted about it. Apologies in advance for this.

Please note that it isn’t always possible to provide a perfect looking bottle/label as this very much depends on the condition they are received in from our supplier.

We occasionally have items available in the shop that are not available to purchase online, usually because they are too fragile or large to post.

We do not have a minimum purchase amount, but delivery charges may apply.

For orders between £25.01 and £60, delivery is charged at £5.99 (3 working days) or £7.99 (next working day).  Some areas are excluded and will incur extra charges. Please see postcodes listed in our Terms and Conditions.

Unfortunately we do not offer gift packaging.

We currently use DHL, but we do also trial other couriers alongside from time to time.

We don’t currently ship outside the UK and Ireland but it may be something we offer in the future.

Unfortunately our carriers do not offer a time specific delivery service. We can send orders to arrive on a specific date but we would remind you that whilst 98% of deliveries arrive within the stated timeframe we cannot 100% guarantee the day. Couriers do often offer delivery windows on the day, with the option to rearrange if necessary.

If you are ordering as a gift we would ask you to take this into account when arranging delivery.

Please note that we are unable to offer weekend deliveries.

Our boxes come in 6s, 12s, and 24s. By no means are you required to order in those quantities, but it is worth bearing in mind when ordering. A full box also helps to reduce the small chance of damage, as empty compartments collapsing can be a cause of this.

Please check the tracking first, as they may provide an explanation but we welcome the opportunity to nip issues in the bud. Either call us on 01553 812000 or email our [email protected] to hear from our customer service team. Check out delivery details for more information.

If you have changed your mind for whatever reason, you can consult our returns information, or get in contact on 01553 812000.

  1. Stujago

A proper pint this one. Very traditional. The head is exceptional and on first taste there is a great bitterness. The flavours are reasonably nutty. Nice and smooth.

  2. Gareth Roberts

Very nice, kept in fridge for an hour prior to pouring, this is one of my favourite beers, will definitely order next time. Smooth, no sign of any tanginess.

  3. David Goater

The pleasant Nutty and Fruity taste of this beer makes it very easy to drink, despite being 5%. The other pleasing thing is 550mls making it a full pint in a bottle (instead of the usual 500ml euro style beer measure).

  4. Darren J Lockwood

This nut brown ale has a nice taste and is 5% ABV

  5. Chris H

Does exactly what it says on the tin, a big glass of nutty brown malty goodness, The malt notes are offset by hints of a yeasty sweetness. A good head, good pour that maintains well. Nice ale.

  6. Steve Hawkins

Toasted malt on the nose. A slight fizz when sipped. A hint of chocolate there too. The finish is dry and light with a malt burst towards the end.

  7. Ben Jones

Very disappointing. Was expecting a classic Brown Ale but to be honest it didn’t taste of much at all.

  8. Peter

This is a cracking brown ale, normally drink Newcastle brown ale but it’s like drinking coloured water compared to the nut brown ale

  9. Lorraine

    A malty, old-fashioned brown ale

  10. David Gouldson

Malty with a subtle nutty flavour. Decent enough beer.

  11. Ian

Unfortunately, the sweetness totally dominates everything; I can barely taste any distinct flavours. It is somewhat ‘watery’ as well, making it seem well below its ABV of 5%..

  12. Ian J

A dark, rich smooth brown ale, maybe a bit on the thin side.

  13. Neil Ward

A good brown ale with complex flavours.

  14. Adam Randall

Straightforward brown ale with a fairly dry roasty palate; dry finish with a touch of sweetness. Pleasant, quite drinkable, but otherwise not a great deal going on.

  15. Derek B

Less sweet than most brown ales and in my opinion it is the better for being so.

  16. Chris Watts

Back in the late eighties I could not get this beer locally but a pub a few miles away had it on tap. So off I would go. The internet has changed that somewhat! A lovely Ale that comes highly recommended from me. Goes well with a steak.

  17. Colin A

Very tasty beer. nice maltyness and caramel aftertaste but not too sweet. lovely stuff. This brewery knows what it’s doing.

  18. Ricky Crook

Definitely the best brown ale I’ve tasted. No bitterness and a very nice smooth taste.

  19. David Winter

Highest tier of session ale, sweet but not too much, malty, full flavoured, but not aggressive or too complex.
