Other Information

Since April 1991, the Kostritzer black beer brewery, a subsidiary of the Bitburger brewery, has emerged as of one of the most modern breweries in Thuringia. In September 1993, it was with great pride we re-introduced the “original Kostritzer black beer”.

Beers of Europe offers an incredible range of Beers from all corners of the globe. We stock over 2,000 beers, ranging from the world’s oldest breweries to the worlds newest and the best in-between. In addition, we stock a wide variety of ciders, spirits, wine, homebrew, and glassware to create the perfect gift or occasion. If you want to know a bit more go to our About page.

No, we also have a shop based on the outskirts of King’s Lynn, Norfolk.

Travelling along the A10 between Downham Market and King’s Lynn, you will come to a small village called Setchey, turn next to J.S.W Car Sales on to Garage Lane and we are located approx. 100m down the lane on the right-hand side. Our address and opening hours can be found on the Contact Us page.

Yes, there are age restrictions in place. In the United Kingdom, the legal age to purchase alcohol is 18 years old. Beers of Europe strictly adheres to these regulations and by agreeing to our Terms and Conditions on checkout you confirm that you are over 18 years old. In store, we operate a Challenge 25 policy, which means that if you appear to be under 25 years old, you will be asked for identification to verify your age.

There’s a particular item I’m looking for, can you get it for me?

We are always happy to see if we can help you track down an item. Please feel free to contact us on our ‘request a product page

For some products supply can be inconsistent, whether that is at the brewery itself or how often we or its supplier imports it. For products that are out of stock, you can sign up to be notified of its return on the product page. From there, as soon as we book the stock in we send an email to you.

Bottles and labels can and do vary. This means that the images shown on our website may not be the same as current stock items. If the bottle or label is important please check before ordering. Please be aware that even if the label looks different, that product will be the same product if it has the same barcode. Because we work from the barcode, if producers does not make us aware of a label change we often miss updates until we are contacted about it. Apologies in advance for this.

Please note that it isn’t always possible to provide a perfect looking bottle/label as this very much depends on the condition they are received in from our supplier.

We occasionally have items available in the shop that are not available to purchase online, usually because they are too fragile or large to post.

We do not have a minimum purchase amount, but delivery charges may apply.

For orders between £25.01 and £60, delivery is charged at £5.99 (3 working days) or £7.99 (next working day).  Some areas are excluded and will incur extra charges. Please see postcodes listed in our Terms and Conditions.

For orders over £60, delivery is £3.99 (3 working days) or £5.99 (next working day). Again some areas are excluded and will incur extra charges. Please see postcodes listed in our Terms and Conditions.

For orders over £100, delivery is free (3 working days) or £3 (next working day). Some areas are excluded and will incur extra charges. Please see postcodes listed in our Terms and Conditions.

We use a variety of thick and sturdy cardboard boxes and dividers to hold each bottle individually. Any remaining spaces are filled with biodegradable air bags to stop movement of the contents. Glasses are wrapped in bubble wrap and cardboard to ensure they arrived in once piece.

When placing your order please add the details at checkout.  We regret that if your order has been packed and is ready to despatch that amendments cannot be made.

All of our orders are shipped without any pricing or payment details, these are in the confirmation email. The only paperwork in the box contains a summary of the order and addresses.

On checkout you can add a message to your order.

Unfortunately we do not offer gift packaging.

We currently use DHL, but we do also trial other couriers alongside from time to time.

We don’t currently ship outside the UK and Ireland but it may be something we offer in the future.

Unfortunately our carriers do not offer a time specific delivery service. We can send orders to arrive on a specific date but we would remind you that whilst 98% of deliveries arrive within the stated timeframe we cannot 100% guarantee the day. Couriers do often offer delivery windows on the day, with the option to rearrange if necessary.

If you are ordering as a gift we would ask you to take this into account when arranging delivery.

Please note that we are unable to offer weekend deliveries.

Our boxes come in 6s, 12s, and 24s. By no means are you required to order in those quantities, but it is worth bearing in mind when ordering. A full box also helps to reduce the small chance of damage, as empty compartments collapsing can be a cause of this.

Please check the tracking first, as they may provide an explanation but we welcome the opportunity to nip issues in the bud. Either call us on 01553 812000 or email our [email protected] to hear from our customer service team. Check out delivery details for more information.

If you have changed your mind for whatever reason, you can consult our returns information, or get in contact on 01553 812000.

  1. Stujago

This is an exceptional beer with an immaculate head. When I imagined a German beer, this is what I thought of. Perfectly balanced between malty, bitter and sweet. Very smooth to drink.

  2. Phil

Great beer, everything you’d stereo-typically expect from a German beer. Very smooth drink with a nice aromatic swell. Has a nice bitter accent too but not too strong. Very highly recommended

  3. John N

Having discovered Kostritzer Schwarzbier in Germany it was great to discover it again from Beers of Europe. The beer is refreshing, malty and perfect for all occasions. As a repeat customer of Kostritzer it has never disappointed. Highly recommended.

  4. Marcus Wellings

    Great malty tasting beer
Smooth and refreshing drink no bitterness
    You will not be disappointed

  5. Jim

First beer of this type. Absolutely excellent. Loads of malt flavour. Definite favourite now

  6. David Hanson

A good one, smooth, malty with some fruitiness. Not too sweet.

  7. Steven Allen

Lots of malt with a bitter dark chocolate hoppy end. Taste wise, this could be a high end standard pilsner. The Krombacher Dark is a superior beer and the bench mark for these schwarzbiers. Don’t get me wrong, for the lager drinker who is looking for a bigger hit, this is still an amazing beer!

  8. Chris H

Decent beer, and a decent price too for a 500ml bottle. Definitely towards the better end of Dunkels. A refreshing malty balance as you’d expect with a Dunkel, but its smoothness is what makes it stand out.

  9. Pukka P

An unusual beer that I like a lot. German lager given a dark twist of well done toast, chocolate and coffee.

  10. Chris Boddy

This ia a great beer – strong flavour but really easy to drink. I’m sure they used to do Urkostritzer as well – be good to have more from this brewery.

  11. Gavin H

Beautifully dark, as black as the name suggests.

Malty aroma and taste, as smooth as you like and deceptively strong (much like myself!).

A classic dark German beer, I’ll definitely be back for more.

  12. MARK BAINTON

A classic beer. Dark malty smooth richness. Well balanced notes of chocolate and coffee. Excellent Dunkel recommended

  13. Gareth Roberts

German Dunkel, nice and malty, crisp. Its a lager that looks like a stout.

  14. Kristin

Pleasant malty flavour, but seems to lack complexity. Not quite sweet enough for my taste

  15. Alan Sinclair

I first tried this in Brandenberg an de Havel in 2018 and it’s my goto beer in Germany.
Very smooth malty flavour and not too sweet.
I think Adnams are doing it now but only in 330ml bottles.

  16. Chris Meechan

I think this is the best Schwarzbier I’ve ever tried. A fig like fruitiness on the nose followed by creamy and a creamy, malty finish. Huge flavours

  17. Matthew W

Consumed at home watching second half of England vs Italy (i.e. the part where it all went wrong). I blame this beer for that. Should have had another English cider like the first half. Anyway…

Pours a dark brown with small beige head, reasonable retention.
Roasty malt aroma, some nuts, coffee, hint of sweetness.
Taste is like aroma, quite roasty and bitter with a slight sweetness to offset. Mid palate lacked something but other than that a good beer.

  18. Paul Boniface

First time I tried this beer and will be back for more. Excellent flavours and a beer that slips down easily

  19. Clive P

Very nice slight smocked flavour not harsh in the slightest, will be back for more of this.

  20. Richard Davison

My first taste of this and I wasn’t disappointed, looked good in the glass, nice malty aroma, smooth tasting with just a slight tang to it, pleased I had a go at this.

  21. Lewis Redhead

If you’ve never had a Schwartzbier think Guinness. However this has a smooth finish . Contrary to what others have said I couldn’t detect any chocolate or coffee. Very easy to drink. Mostly definitely not hoppy but not overly malty either -but don’t read that as meaning bland . Worth a try.

  22. John Jones

This is so much better than the other German dark beers I’ve sampled.
Very smooth and not a hint of harshness, full bodied and quite malty with a satisfying and lingering aftertaste. Would certainly have again.

  23. WJ

This is one of the better dark one I have tried, not over malty with tastes of coffee and a hint of caramel. It doesn’t have that overdone burnt taste so many of these do.

  24. Russell Castley-Adams

I remember trying this in Hamburg back in the 2000s and I haven’t tried any other Schwarzbier that beats it yet. Dark, Smooth and malty, with hints of coffee and chocolate. Superb!
