Other Information

The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavour is derived from an ale yeast that is “lagered” (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

For some products supply can be inconsistent, whether that is at the brewery itself or how often we or its supplier imports it. For products that are out of stock, you can sign up to be notified of its return on the product page. From there, as soon as we book the stock in we send an email to you.

Bottles and labels can and do vary. This means that the images shown on our website may not be the same as current stock items. If the bottle or label is important please check before ordering. Please be aware that even if the label looks different, that product will be the same product if it has the same barcode. Because we work from the barcode, if producers does not make us aware of a label change we often miss updates until we are contacted about it. Apologies in advance for this.

Please note that it isn’t always possible to provide a perfect looking bottle/label as this very much depends on the condition they are received in from our supplier.

We occasionally have items available in the shop that are not available to purchase online, usually because they are too fragile or large to post.

We do not have a minimum purchase amount, but delivery charges may apply.

For orders between £25.01 and £60, delivery is charged at £5.99 (3 working days) or £7.99 (next working day).  Some areas are excluded and will incur extra charges. Please see postcodes listed in our Terms and Conditions.

Unfortunately we do not offer gift packaging.

We currently use DHL, but we do also trial other couriers alongside from time to time.

We don’t currently ship outside the UK and Ireland but it may be something we offer in the future.

Unfortunately our carriers do not offer a time specific delivery service. We can send orders to arrive on a specific date but we would remind you that whilst 98% of deliveries arrive within the stated timeframe we cannot 100% guarantee the day. Couriers do often offer delivery windows on the day, with the option to rearrange if necessary.

If you are ordering as a gift we would ask you to take this into account when arranging delivery.

Please note that we are unable to offer weekend deliveries.

Our boxes come in 6s, 12s, and 24s. By no means are you required to order in those quantities, but it is worth bearing in mind when ordering. A full box also helps to reduce the small chance of damage, as empty compartments collapsing can be a cause of this.

Please check the tracking first, as they may provide an explanation but we welcome the opportunity to nip issues in the bud. Either call us on 01553 812000 or email our [email protected] to hear from our customer service team. Check out delivery details for more information.

If you have changed your mind for whatever reason, you can consult our returns information, or get in contact on 01553 812000.

The Kolsch brewers certainly know how to make fantastic beer and the good folk at Gaffel Becker & Co are certainly no exception. Typical Kolsch being bright and clear with a straw-yellow hue, crisp and refreshing – this is a particularly good Kolsch!

  2. Krid Marina

A very nice Kolsch but doesn’t travel as well as Fruh or Reissdorf. Best drunk in the across from the cathedral

  3. Matthew W

A fantastic drink, crisp, smooth and refreshing taste with a “wanting more” after taste. Definitely one of my all time favourite Kolsch to buy and Unquestionably one of the best german beers ive had.

  4. Andrew R.

A bright, clear and crisp brew. Subtly hopped and with a fresh, hint-of-fruit sweet finish. A solid beer for a warm summer afternoon.

  5. DSK

Gaffel, The King of Kolsch! This is the best of the style for me. It’s crisp and delightful, but only slighly sweet with just enough hoppiness. It’s got just the right amount of sparkle and I can’t recommend it more highly. Yes, it is served best on the Alter Markt in the Alt Stadt of Koln, but I’ll take it where-ever I can get it these days. Top tip: buy the proper glass to serve it in!

  6. Chris Meechan

Not quite in the same league as Fruh kolsch but sharing many of the same characteristics. It has a subtle malt and hop balance with hints of strawberry. A very pleasant kolsch.

  7. Alastair_H

Gaffel was my favourite on tap when working in Germany, however I have to agree Fruh is actually slightly better in bottles. Nice crisp clean taste.

  8. Dean Griffiths

Big fan of Kolsch beer and Gaffel is definitely one of the best.

  9. Brian Feuillet

The first time I tried this beer was on a river cruise in Germany, it was the first Kolsch I tasted it was crisp with a nice malty taste, it was heaven sitting on deck watching the world go by and sipping this beer. Then I found it here and sit in the garden enjoying this beer and remembering that holiday.

  10. Steve Plummer

A good example of Kolsch beer – always to be served ice cold in small quantity (1/2 pint maximum) at a time to maximise the crisp freshness. A speciality of Cologne. A really nice beer for a hot sunny day – or the depths of winter.

  11. Kul

Gaffel is pale, marginally darker than Fruh Kolsch, slightly fruity with a crisp, clean, faint hop finish. Slightly bitter after taste, a good head and a fair texture. I prefer Fruh but still a great beer.

  12. Andrew Pople

Really enjoyed this one. Smooth and crisp and easy to stick. Less sharp than some others, but that’s not a bad thing.

  13. Michael Moore

Refreshing, malty, slight hoppy bitterness. Will go for this again.

  14. Billy Sayers

A very nice kölsh – sweet and grainy like a helles lager with a nice delicate hop note. I can see why this is popular.

  15. Peter

    An easy drinking refreshing beer

  16. Kris

A tasty Kolsch with a hint of maltiness. I might even prefer this to the Fruh but it would be a hard decision.

  17. WF

I couldn’t really separate this from Reissdorf nor did I think it was a good as Fruh, still well worth trying though.

  18. Paul Boniface

A great Kolsch that is refreshing and very drinkable. Definitely worth trying.

  19. Milan Macurak

I love Kolsch-style beer forever. Gaffel is another example of why you need to visit Cologne as soon as possible. Very nice, mild, and crispy taste with that typical ”mixed” taste of beer from top fermentation.

  20. Tim Bright

A beer that has to be brewed within a 50km radius of Cologne. Kolsch is warm fermented with top fermenting yeast then conditioned at cold temperature like a lager. This is a gorgeous beer similar to a Pilsner, fresh light clean and smooth, some initial sweetness with a lovely dry finish.

  21. Ryan Winson

I absolutely love Gaffel, love it. Will be ordering many, many more

  22. Vlad

    crisp, dry, bitter, simple, nice
