Other Information

Dortmunder Union Export is a pale lager brewed by Dortmunder Union in Dortmund, Germany.

The publication of A Treatise on Lager Beers in 1969 set out the view that Dortmunder is a pale lager that is distinctive enough to be classed as a separate beer style. Beers that are categorised as Dortmunder and are brewed outside of the UK tend to be pale in colour with a soft, rounded character.

Dortmunder Union Export is clear golden in colour with visible carbonation and a large, foamy head. The aroma is faintly sweet with grainy malts and a hint of grassy hops and hay. The flavour follows the nose with slightly sweet, grainy malt at the forefront. The finish is lightly bitter with a slight metallic aftertaste. This lager is light to medium bodied with a full, almost creamy, mouthfeel and lively carbonation.

Please be aware that even if the label looks different, that product will be the same product if it has the same barcode. Because we work from the barcode, if producers does not make us aware of a label change we often miss updates until we are contacted about it. Apologies in advance for this.

Please note that it isn’t always possible to provide a perfect looking bottle/label as this very much depends on the condition they are received in from our supplier.

We occasionally have items available in the shop that are not available to purchase online, usually because they are too fragile or large to post.

Unfortunately we do not offer gift packaging.

We currently use DHL, but we do also trial other couriers alongside from time to time.

We don’t currently ship outside the UK and Ireland but it may be something we offer in the future.

Unfortunately our carriers do not offer a time specific delivery service. We can send orders to arrive on a specific date but we would remind you that whilst 98% of deliveries arrive within the stated timeframe we cannot 100% guarantee the day. Couriers do often offer delivery windows on the day, with the option to rearrange if necessary.

If you are ordering as a gift we would ask you to take this into account when arranging delivery.

Please note that we are unable to offer weekend deliveries.

Our boxes come in 6s, 12s, and 24s. By no means are you required to order in those quantities, but it is worth bearing in mind when ordering. A full box also helps to reduce the small chance of damage, as empty compartments collapsing can be a cause of this.

Please check the tracking first, as they may provide an explanation but we welcome the opportunity to nip issues in the bud. Either call us on 01553 812000 or email our [email protected] to hear from our customer service team. Check out delivery details for more information.

  1. Derek B

I was a little disappointed, whilst it is a good drink it lacks that crisp taste associated with Dortmund beers despite being slightly higher in alcohol content.

  2. Steven Palmer

This is a classic Dortmunder beer from the Bierstadt. Easy drinking and very refreshing. Clean in the mouth and great to share at a barbecue

  3. Chris H

A crisply light Dortmunder that goes down well enough but needed a stronger finish. There are better Dortmunders for sure.

  4. Steven Allen

Fantastic lager, starts very creamy, think vanilla ice cream, malty notes come through and soon break down to a dry white wine after taste!

  5. ian

i have drank imported lagers/ pilsners for many years, particularly German brands. i have to say that this label in my opinion is vastly under rated. it is a good basic honest german lager, plenty of body without being heavy it slips down so easily before you know it you are onto your 2nd or was it the 3rd. also excellent value for money. cheers.

  6. Dean Griffiths

Very light in colour and pours with a nice white fluffy head. Very smooth with a touch of hoppy ness. First time I’ve tried this one will definitely be having again, a big thumbs up.

  7. Gavin H

This could almost be the definitive lager. Light, creamy, easy drinking. Hints of subtle hoppiness and very refreshing. If your experience of lager is the mass-produced gassy stuff they serve in large-chain pubs, be prepared for something completely different – and so much better!

  8. Hywel Davies

A really excellent crisp lager. As good as the Munich beers and a fair bit cheaper. Don’t be put off by the price.

  9. Chris

Light golden colour with a sweet and grainy malt taste, light bitterness towards the end. Possibly one of the nicest German beers I’ve had.

  10. Ian A

Nice smooth German beer. Very easy drinking and i’m happy I ordered a few.

  11. Gareth Roberts

Malty Dortmunder, one to loik forward to when European Football travels return.

  12. Jens

Don’t be fooled by the rather basic label design, this is a faultless export style beer with a well-rounded, though not overly complex, flavour palette.

  13. Milan Macurak

Superior beer with very mild finish. So far the best Dortmunder I drank. Highly recommended.

  14. Paul Boniface

A very understated lager. Crisp, smooth and easily drinkable. Will certainly order more.

  15. Alan Hastings

Very malty in taste which didn’t impress me to be honest as there are too many better export lagers out there.

  16. Kul

A very pale golden colour with a bright white volumous foamy head. The aroma is light, sweet faintly grainy with a hint of grassy hops and hay. It has a palate that follows being slightly sweet, grainy malty on 1st tasting with a finish that is slightly bitter and a after taste more akin to a pilsner. This lager is light to medium bodied with a gentle almost creamy, mouthfeel.
As a said more akin to a pilsner, so may try again.

  17. A. Muse

An excellent summer drinking lager. Full of flavour with a pleasant finish. I will certainly be buying this again

  18. SCorley73

Just a lovely drink. Clean, crisp, not too sweet and a great lager on a hot summer night. As commented before, pilsnerish in taste and at a percentage that can get the job done!

  19. Michael Moore

Good example of a Dortmunder lager, beautiful pale gold and really refreshing.

  20. Peter

    a good refreshing ;ager

  21. Andrew Milne

First drank this in 1988 whilst stationed in Germany, its as good today as it was then, only one criticism, its FAR too drinkable!!!

  22. Christine Saunders

a nice easy drinking smooth beer

  23. Stujago

Very light, clean and crisp lager.

  24. James Petrie

An excellent beer which I drank many litres of in Munster when I was a soldier there. It has the same malty taste as did the draft bier did all those years ago. Enjoying every bottle!!!. Glad to be going to Germany on Thursday 16th Sept for a month. Prost!!!!

  25. Ian Whitehouse

Possibly my favourite German beer that’s not a Kölsch. Without repeating what’s already been written here about carbonation, it’s one of the best bottled beers I’ve come across for giving a good foamy head… if you like that sort of thing 😁
Downsides?? Well it’s WAY too drinkable for it’s 5.3% ABV 😉 so if you’re drinking a fair few of them (highly likely) be sure sure to check the legs are still working before standing up and walking too far 🤪

  26. John May

My beer of choice during 13 years in RAF Germany. Only the size of the bottle has changed. Light, crisp and very palatable.

  27. william docherty

Lovely fresh beer , nice in small frosted glass

  28. Harry Watson

One of my favourites nice smooth malty tasting beer from Dortmund.

  29. peter mcgregor

    Superb Dortmunder bier!

  30. John Mcguckin

Excelent as always. Been drinking it for over 35 years and still enjoy every glass.

  31. Luke Manley

Great beer. good value for money.

  32. Lee Renshaw

Not a fan of this one, a bit harsh and tasted a bit run-of-the-mill. There are many many better German beers.

  33. Jamie K

Great beer at a good price. One that I always return to because it doesn’t disappoint

  34. Tony Hartley

Decent honest Dortmunder beer – nothing remarkable but is good value, and very drinkable. Good enough for 25000 people in the Dortmund “Yellow Wall” to create an amazing atmosphere; good enough for me.

  35. Mark Haran

Great german beer with a good aftertaste. Honest value for money and always worth a return visit!!!

  36. Ryan Winson

Great beer and for the price it is outstanding value for money

  37. Frank Miller

Originally brewed for the German coal and steel workers , Union delivers a crisp refreshing beer, very versatile works well with bbqs or as a stand alone beer.

  38. David Beckham

Clean, crisp, refreshing. Easy to go down. Will definitely buy again.
    100% recommend.

  39. Stephen Brocklesby

    Nice, crisp and clean

  40. John Evans

A great “Thirst Quensher !”, Clean, tasty, good AVB and good value for money. I will most certainly be buying it again.
