The Chimay Blue Cap, “baptised’ “Grande Reserve” in 750 ml bottles is a dark Trappist beer with a powerful aroma, the complex flavour of which improves across the years. It was first brewed as a Christmas beer, explaining the presence of a “vintage”.
This authentic Belgian beer, whose tinge of fresh yeast is associated with a light rosy flowery touch, is particularly pleasant. Its aroma, perceived as one enjoys it, only accents the delightful sensations revealed by the odour, all revealing a light but agreeable caramelised note.
It is served ideally at cellar temperature (10 to 12°C).

A very nice strong, creamy and smooth taste to this . Maybe a little overpriced but not by much

CHIMAY is just that bit better

Top beer. Remained my favourite since living in Brussels in the 80’s.
Pricey but you probably won’t dink many in a night.
Stephen Leman –
Chimay Blue is what winter nights are for, just a delightful sipping beer and very smooth considering the ABV. One of the best Trappists, perhaps a tie with Westmalle Tripel.

What a beer! A truly bold tasting beer with a storng punch but with the almost sweet taste balancing what could be considered, the perfect blend. .

Having tasted a few strong ales recently, this tastes strong and seems harsh, lacking the smoothness. The taste is pleasant but dominated by the high alcohol content so hard to taste the complexicity
Jennifer –
A favourite of ours. A great beer for drinking slowly by a winter fire.

The best of the Chimay beers in my opinion. A strong, dark Belgian ale with a well balanced malt bill and a sweet finish

The body is burgundy mahogany, with a beige head Smells of dark fruit & yeast Tastes of honey caramel malts dates nutmeg ends earthy bitter anise This hides the ABV well, it is a classic first widely available Belgian ale for everyone to try.

This in no way tastes like a 9% beer. Somehow lacking a bit in flavour for me but I had it when it was very young. Still very, very good and I’m glad I tried it but there are better Belgian beers out there for the price. Will still buy it again though because i think it might age well in a collection.

My favourite of Chimay’s offerings, a very finely balanced and flavourful combination of malt, dark fruit, smooth caramel, with a little bitter spice and sweetness. It’s an approachable and highly representative example of the Belgian strong ale style.

The best of the Chimay stable. A wonderful dark beer, full bodied with a rich creamy head. Very complex taste wise with flavours of malt, hops, dark fruits and spices.
