The brewers at Duvel have been working creatively since 2007 to give Duvel extra punch and a little more bitterness with a third, additional hop variety. The efforts have been surprising, year after year and have earned medals in national and international beer competitions.
The Duvel Tripel Hop Tasting Box contains all 6 of the Duvel Tripel Hops that have been released so far. The beers are all variations on the Duvel Tripel with an additional hop to make the editions special and include:
Amarillo - the Amarillo hop was relatively unknown in 2007 but has since become one of the best known hops in the craft beer world. This Duvel Tripel Hop has a pronounced fruity flavour with grapefruit, orange, lemon, melon, apricot and peach notes.
Citra - the award winning blend, with the Duvel Tripel Hop of 2012 winning a gold medal at the Brussels Beer Challenge and the consumer trophy at the Zythos Beer Festival. The Citra hops add crisp notes of grapefruit, lime, tropical fruit, melon and cassis to the typical Duvel flavours.
Sorachi Ace - a hop variety of Japanese origin, it imparts fresh and exotic notes, slightly fruity, with lime, lemon and dill. Some light mint may also be discernible.
Mosaic - a one of a kind hop variety resulting from a unique combination of strong aromas and its bittering value. The fruity aroma of blueberries, citrus, papaya and apple blossoms adds a complex yet fresh note.
Equinox - until 2014, Equinox was an experimental hop variety which went by the name of HBC 366. The current name, Equinox, reflects the hops’ physical characteristics - vibrant yellow as the plant bursts through the soil and deep green as it matures. The aroma is fruity with a combination of lemon, lime, papaya and apple with a light note of green pepper giving some extra punch.
HBC291 - a very experimental hop variety, combining the fiery taste of black pepper with milder aromas of roses, lavender and a light citrus note.
The Duvel Tripel Hop Tasting Box was released to allow the public to vote for their top three blends, with the ultimate Duvel Tripel Hop blend being adding to the range in 2017. Whilst Duvel now know the Ultimate Duvel Tripel Hop liked best, they are still interested in hearing their fan’s preference.
