It’s big business and the Belgians are known to take their beers incredibly seriously, so why not get in on the action and see what all the fuss is about?

Beer brewing history
Beer brewing in Belgium has been around for centuries, dating back to the age of the first crusades, with it being distributed by abbeys as a fund raising method and thought to be a sanitary alternative to water. Over the years brewing methods evolved, and the first official Trappist brewery was established in 1836. Initially the dark, sweet beer produced there was exclusively for the monks, and it wasn’t until 1861 that the first sale of beer was recorded. Since then Belgian brewing has gone from strength to strength—there are now around 180 breweries in the country, made up of international giants as well as smaller micro establishments, and this means the sheer variety of styles on offer will leave even the most ardent of beer drinkers spoilt for choice.

Variety
Belgian beer ranges from pale lager styles to lambic beers, seasonal varieties and rich Flemish reds with strong beers being common, so there’s something for every taste bud going. The majority of Belgian beers are sold in tinted Vichy-style glass bottles to protect the nectar from the effects of sunlight, whilst those available on draught tend to be of the pale lager variety. And you’re certainly not short of options. It’s estimated that there’s somewhere in the region of 700 different types of beer to choose from in the country with it exporting 60% of its creations, and that means you can enjoy authentic Belgian beer right here in the UK.
