Armagnac

Armagnac

Armagnac is a type of brandy that is produced in the Armagnac region in Southwest France. Like cognac, it is distilled from wine, but it is only distilled once, whereas cognac undergoes the process of double distillation. It is then aged in oak barrels to further enhance its fruity, rustic flavours.

Armagnac is France’s oldest brandy and the region (of the same name) was the first place in the country to begin distilling spirits. It is thought that the production of Armagnac began in the twelfth century and was well-established by the fifteenth century onwards. The Armagnac region lies between the Adour and Garonne rivers at the foothills of the Pyrenees.

Armagnac brandy is often describes as more fragrant and flavoursome than cognac. This may because it is aged in an oak barrel which allows for oxidation and the creation of more complex aromatic compounds. The brandy is sold under various different classifications which usually refer to its age.

Armagnac festivals in France
Every year the Armagnac Festival takes place in the medieval town of Labastide d’Armagnac. The event which takes place in October, celebrates the country’s oldest brandy with market stalls, food and activities for all of the family.

Serving Armagnac
Armagnac is most commonly drunk as a digestif. This is a drink which is served after a meal to aid digestion. It can also be paired with a wide range of deserts including apple tarts, nougat and caramelised pairs. Many people also drink it with coffee.
