8 Sail Brewery
8 Sail Brewery
8 Sail Brewery is a microbrewery employing two members of staff, brewers Tony and Steve.
8 Sail was established in 2010 by proprietor Tony who, after 30 years in teaching, decided to fulfil a personal dream. Initially running the brewery as a part time venture, Tony retired from teaching to concentrate on the brewery full time two years later, when Steve joined. Steve retired from the Royal Air Force in 2012 having flown for 32 years. In that time, the five barrel brewery has steadily grown in reputation and are picking up awards for their beers, including SIBA Regional Winner (Gold) in the Porter Category 2014. Whilst there are currently no plans the extend the brewery or its capacity, Steve and Tony admit may they need to re-think this.
The Brewery is located on the historical site of the 8 sailed Heckington Windmill in the rural village of Heckington near Sleaford in Lincolnshire. Situated on the edge of the Lincolnshire Fens. The nineteenth century railway station is situated beside the windmill and brewery with trains on the trains on the Nottingham-Grantham-Skegness Poacher Line stopping on their way to and from the coastal resort.
8 Sail beer aims to recreate traditional beer styles that were once popular as well as those to suit modern tastes. The partnership with the windmill makes the brewery unique with the majority of the grains used in the brewing process being grown and malted locally, with some of it being milled next door. Whilst they are separate businesses the brewery and windmill work closely together to share the historical links between brewing and milling to the public.
